September 18 was the 9th Annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children.

Co-sponsored by Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, Priests for Life, and the Pro-Life Action League, this annual event is a unique way to educate our communities about the truth about abortion. It is also an opportunity for us to visit one of the 56 U.S. gravesites for aborted children, or any one of the many other memorials for aborted babies across the country.

This year, Susan S. Arnall, Director of Outreach and Engagement for the Right to Life League, gave an address at the gravesite for aborted babies at the Los Angeles Odd Fellows Cemetery. The full text follows.

Forty-eight years ago, our Supreme Court justices delivered a decision that undermined the principles of Life and Liberty which our Founding Fathers had long labored and sacrificed to secure at great personal cost. That legal decision, Roe v Wade, stands in direct opposition to our nation’s guiding principles that proclaim all men are created equal.

That court decision and its progeny have split our nation. We are now engaged in a great civil war, testing whether our nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to principles of life, can long endure legalized abortion.

Today we stand on one of the burial grounds for the unnamed victims of this great civil war. We have come to remember the lives lost in this battle for human rights and to honor a portion of this ground, as a final resting place for those unborn martyrs whose lives were taken in justification of that fateful judicial decision made so long ago.

It is proper that we should remember who they were and what we as a people have lost. More than 62 million human beings have died in this civil war. They were future mothers, fathers, teachers, neighbors and friends. They were future priests, boy scout leaders, little league coaches, sisters and brothers — They were fellow Americans.

The innocent victims taken in the womb have hallowed this place. Their silent sacrifices have consecrated the place where we stand, far beyond our ability to describe that testament.

It is for us, the living, to rededicate ourselves here to honor those sacrificed to this war on Life itself, and to advance the noble defense of those at risk of abortion. It is here we solemnly rededicate ourselves to the great task remaining before us -- to end abortion across this nation.

From these innocent victims, we draw increased devotion to our sacred cause to save the unborn and so end this civil war for life. We here solemnly pledge that these young martyrs shall not have died in vain and that our nation, under God, shall bring forth a rebirth of faith and compassion for all humanity so that all those conceived shall one day share fully in the divine blessings of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as is intended by our Creator.
